If you're a designer, go beyond making it look pretty — learn how to develop brand strategy from the ground up with my list of top strategy courses. In 2026, the demand for designers who can think strategically has never been higher, making these skills essential for career growth.
If you're a consultant who is onboarding a new client and you don't take the time to understand the business behind it, the target audience, the appropriate tone of voice and messaging, then you're just doing disservice to your client. Taking shortcuts early in the process almost always leads to misaligned deliverables and frustrated stakeholders down the line.
Similarly if you're an entrepreneur who dismiss brand strategy and jumps straight into logo & brand identity design, then will most likely end up confused, not even mentioning potential business failure. A strong strategic foundation ensures every visual decision supports your business goals and resonates with your target market.
What is the goal of brand strategy?
The goal of brand strategy is to focus all your visual, verbal and conceptual thinking on design solutions that will help you client achieve your business and marketing objectives. It transforms subjective design decisions into objective, measurable outcomes that drive real business results.
That's why you need to get clarity on key aspects of branding in order to be able to make decisions that are "on brand". This clarity becomes your north star for every creative decision you make throughout the project.

Brand strategy is basically bridging the gap between the business and design. It's the critical thinking layer that ensures your creative work serves a purpose beyond aesthetics.
Brand strategy is the foundation for building a strong brand.
Your goal as a brand strategist is to go above and beyond just making your brand look pretty — you need to make it work. This means understanding market dynamics, customer psychology, and competitive positioning before touching any design software.

Developing brand strategy will help you learn as much about the business as possible, so that you can propose the best possible creative solutions. The more you understand about your client's challenges and opportunities, the more impactful your work becomes.
But if you don't go into your project with some sort of a strategy, you will most likely get a lot of push back from your client. Without strategic rationale, every design decision becomes a battle of personal preferences rather than informed choices.
And you and your clients will be very subjective, saying something like: "I don't like blue" — then it becomes a very difficult conversation. Strategy gives you the language and framework to move past subjective opinions toward objective solutions.
So when you don't do the strategy it becomes very subjective and more of an art critique. This wastes time, erodes trust, and often leads to mediocre results that satisfy no one.
That's why business solutions that have both rationale and creative parts at their core are essential to differentiating you and your work from the pack. In 2026, clients expect strategic thinking as standard—not a premium add-on.
So without further ado — let's look at some of the best brand strategy courses available online.

Simon Sinek is the author of the bestselling book Start With Why and the more practical version Find Your Why — a written version of his online course. His TED Talk remains one of the most-watched presentations on leadership and purpose.
A practical guide for discovering purpose for you and your team.
This course is designed to help you find words to express what truly inspires you. It's particularly powerful for founders and teams who sense they have something meaningful to offer but struggle to articulate it clearly.

Cost: $250 | Length: 2 hours minimum | By Simon Sinek
Simon's course is based on the concept of Golden Circle which he explains is grounded in the biology of human decision making. Understanding this framework changes how you approach every brand conversation.
This easy-to-follow guide starts with discovering your personal WHY, and then expands to articulating your organization's WHY. The personal discovery process often reveals surprising insights that translate directly into authentic brand positioning.
So whether you're a CEO or a team, these simple steps will lead you on a path to a more fulfilling life and long-term success for you and your brand. Companies with a clear purpose consistently outperform those focused solely on profit.
Over 16,000 people have become students of this course. The global community of WHY practitioners continues to grow as more organizations recognize the power of purpose-driven branding.
This online course costs only $250 and contains short and actionable videos together with worksheets to help you implement what you learn right away. The investment pays for itself the moment you can articulate your purpose to a prospective client.
I strongly recommend this course for all CEO's and teams who either start a new business/brand or go through a rebrand process. It's foundational work that should precede any visual identity development.
PS. I based the Brand Purpose exercise of my Strategy Guide on the Simon's concept of Golden Circle.
Donald Miller is a New York Times bestselling author and CEO of StoryBrand and he has helped over 10,000 businesses clarify their message. His framework has become the industry standard for brand messaging in 2026.
An online course to help you create a clear message that works.
In this course, he'll help you clarify your company's message so customers pay attention and respond. The clarity you gain translates directly into higher conversion rates and stronger customer relationships.

Cost: $275 | Length: 28 Videos, 20 hours | By Donald Miller
Donald's course is based on his proprietary storytelling framework described in more detail in his books StoryBrand and the most recent Marketing Made Simple. The framework works because it's rooted in timeless storytelling principles that resonate across cultures.
His 7-step messaging framework goes like this:
"A character who wants something encounters a problem before they can get it. At the peak of their despair, a guide steps into their lives gives them a plan, and calls them to action. That action helps them avoid failure and ends in a success."
Although this is not a typical brand strategy course but a messaging framework, it's worth mentioning because messaging is a big part of developing a sound brand strategy. In fact, many brand failures stem from unclear messaging rather than poor visual design.
You will learn how to use words to tell a compelling brand story and position your brand as a guide and solution to your customer's problems and pain points. This positioning shift—from hero to guide—is transformational for most brands.
In this course, you'll get access to a free online tool (worksheets) that guides you through the implementation process step-by-step. The tools make it easy to apply the framework immediately after completing each module.
I highly recommend this course for anyone working on website copy, email sequences and sales letters. It's also invaluable for creating pitch decks and sales presentations that convert.
PS. I based my Storytelling Guide on the Donald's StoryBrand framework.

Don't get fooled by Brand Master Academy by Stephen Houraghan—I bought this course from the recommendation of Jacob Cass.
An overpriced course that doesn't provide any practical knowledge (and rebranded from Udemy).
Jacob essentially teamed up with Stephen to take his $9.99 Udemy course and rebrand it to make money off of unaware designers.

In this course, Stephen just paraphrases industry books, but the content is very chaotic and the author is all over the place (just check reviews on Udemy). The lack of original frameworks or methodologies is disappointing.
They just essentially teamed up to make money off of unaware designers—Jacob makes money as an affiliate, and Stephen profits from his large following. It's a cautionary tale about influencer recommendations.
When I complained about the course quality and asked for a refund, Jacob defamed me in the community and started spreading false narrative that I stole from Stephen.
Jacob is such a liar and a hypocrite that he even featured in his article my own proprietary framework (not Stephens) and he uses a version of my framework with his clients (and not Stephen's).
Also pay attention to the shady marketing tactics they use, e.g. the free social proof plugin that shows fake sales to make you feel like people buy this course—don't get fooled!
